Maria Theresa reigned Austro-Hungarian empire from 1740 to 1780. She reformed education in 1755. In the new school system, all children aged between 6 and 12 had to attend school because more than half of the population in Austria was illiterate.

Ryan Hreljac is a student, born in 1991. At the age of six he was told by his teacher about his peers in Africa who had to walk many miles just to get water. Ryan was deeply moved and decided to do something. He saved his pocket money by doing extra housework and eventually saved 2,000 dollars. The money was used for building a well next to Angolo Primary School in 1999.
Diana Spencer, Princess of Wales was married to Charles, Prince of Wales. She was well known for her fund-raising work for international charities. She received recognition for her charity work and for her support of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines. She died in a car accident in 1997.
Joze Plecnik was born in Ljubljana in 1872. He studied architecture in Vienna. In 1920 he took a post in Ljubljana where he taught at the University of Ljubljana’s Faculty of Engineering. He did a lot of work free of charge. Even as a professor, he taught for some time without being paid. Plecnik built several masterpieces in Ljubljana: the Stadium, The Triple Bridge and the National and University Library to name a few. Another, even greater work by Plecnik is the beautiful arc with small funeral chapels at the entrance to Ljubljana's main cemetery.
