Some people are opponents of bicycling in hills and mountains because of its bad influence on the people and nature.
Read the text and find at least three positive and three negative points of cycling in the mountains.
What are the positive and negative aspects of mountain biking in Slovenia?
Many people believe that mountain biking in the Alps and high hills, like Pohorje, can be harmful to our nature. It is also believed that trails with dogs, small children, tourists and people with disabilities are not places for bikes.
Firstly, this argument is wrong because uncrowded, properly marked trails can be used by bikers who can control their speed. There is little evidence of injuries caused by cyclists to people walking in these areas. Secondly, bicycles are not so fast, powerful, or massive. Bike brakes are capable of stopping a fast bike in a very short distance. Of course, we don’t want people who walk in the nature to worry that they will get hit by the bike. Therefore there should be hiking-only trails for those who worry about their safety.
There are some disadvantages because bicycling is harmful to natural ecosystems. Bicycling hurts plants or flowers when riders tread over them. Wild riding may cause erosion and damage on our landscape. However, all users damage flora and fauna.
Research shows the impacts to plants and animals of people being out in the nature are about the same as the impacts of bicycling. Bicyclists go faster, but people spend more time in nature, a lot of times leave their litter there and are not punished for that. On the other hand, outdoor recreation helps our health and body and we won’t have so many fat people walking around.
To sum up, it is unfair for all these problems of nature to blame on bicycling. In my opinion, educating our youth in schools and through TV programmes can create a peaceful community of all trail users.
