All throughout my life I have never been a “skinny” girl. In school I was teased almost every day for being “fat” and every day I would go home and feel completely horrible about myself because no matter how much anyone else told me “It’s okay, he’s just being a jerk” he still hurt my feelings. I was a subject of bullying and I hated it! There were times where I just wanted to give up and ask my mom to switch schools or at least switch classes, but I had other friends at my school that I didn’t want to leave and I didn’t want to give in to the bully!
This bullying happened in the 6th grade and the bullies may think it will pass and everyone will forget about it years later, but still to this day I remember him sitting in class teasing me about being “fat”. The feelings and emotions that happen when you get bullied don’t go away but they do decline over time. Yes I still remember the feelings and emotions I felt when I was being bullied but they do not feel the same as when I was being bullied; they’re simply memories, not emotions now.
Looking back on being bullied I realized that whenever he bullied me, I would say something back or just sit in my chair and look embarrassed. I remember my mom telling me “just ignore him sweetie, he will stop” and at first I didn’t listen to her but eventually I ignored him and he did eventually stop.
What I’m trying to say is bullies love to get a reaction out of the people they’re bullying, whether its fear, anger, pain, tears, or even yelling back; they love the reaction out of their “victims”. When I stopped giving my bully a reaction, he stopped bullying me. Now, being older and in high school, I am not a victim of bullying but if I were I think I wouldn’t react any different than I did in 6th grade. I would ignore the hateful words the bully was saying and he would eventually stop like the bully did in middle school.
Going through that experience of being bullied, I think, it made me a better person. I learned to appreciate myself and know that there are mean people in life but because I didn’t stoop to their level and give them a reaction it made me a better person.
