The day was first associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer, an English poet, in the Middle Ages. In the 18th Century, in England lovers expressed their love for each other by sending flowers, offering pastry (like cakes, muffins), and sending greeting cards (known as "valentines"). Today lovers send greeting cards to their beloved ones, as a ′romantic symbol and an invitation to unlock the giver’s heart′.
