COMPUTER BUG

Read the text and find three actions that started earlier and were going on longer than the other actions. Click them.

My mornings include a ritual of three activities, and you don't have to be exceptionally witty to work them out. The first one includes the bathroom and some hot water, the second one the kitchen and some hot coffee, and the third one my room and my hot, new PC. Yesterday morning I was just completing the ritual, turning the PC on and opening my browser, when I heard a thwap, thwap, thwap noise that was coming from the machine. I checked the screen: nothing special. I tried to restart, plug and unplug a couple of times, but nothing seemed to work - the PC was still producing the same strange noise. What's going on? I cried aloud, but no helpful reply came from my digital mate. This seemingly manageable inconvenience started to turn into a nightmare when I remembered that the PC could potentially break down, which would mean losing all my files. OMG! But then I discovered the 'technical' reason for the threatening noise. In the corner behind the computer, a clumsy June bug was trying desperately to get out of my plastic storage box. I guess I could call that accident a computer bug, couldn't I?

GRAMMAR LOG

The Past Continuos Tense
When we want to say that a longer action was interrupted by a shorter one, we use the Past Continuous Tense. See the ‘Grammar Log.’

The person in the photo is stressed because something negative has happened. Talk in pairs and say what could be the reason for the stress. Use one of the phrases below.

The person could/may/might be. . .
Perhaps the person has/is. . .

Have you ever lost any data from your computer? Or any contacts from your electronic address books? Tell your partner about it and use the Past Continuous to explain what you were doing, or what was happening when you lost the data. You can use structures similar to these:
     I was watching. . .      when by accident I switched off. . .
     I was trying to. . .      when my brother. . .
Backing up files on your computer keeps your files safe. How about your personal safety when communicating online? What are some possible dangers of using social networking websites?

Observe the poster below and discuss online safety in pairs. In your notebook, justify the dos and don’ts from the prompts in the poster and explain the reasons for them.
